VUTEk® UltraVu® 5330 EC used to print one of America's largest billboards for Stop Handgun Violence.

UniGraphic Inc. of Massachusetts, USA, has used its VUTEk® UltraVu® 5330 EC to produce one America-s largest billboards measuring 72 m x 6 m, as part of a campaign for the Stop Handgun Violence organization. Utilizing its VUTEk® UltraVu® 5330-s eight-color capabilities, UniGraphic Inc. printed high quality graphics installed at the Fenway Park stadium, home to the Boston Redsox baseball team.

Bob Quinlan, President of UniGraphic Inc. comments, ‘We believe the UltraVu® 5330 EC to be the fastest billboard printer on the market, with the capabilities to produce consistent, high quality print. As such, it only took eight hours to print the 72 m image enabling us to also fulfill all of our other client commitments.

-The brief was to print an unusually large billboard as part of a campaign to reduce gun crime. Other companies had tried before, and claimed that it was impossible, due to its size. ‘Impossible’ is not a word that UniGraphic is familiar with. Our client, the agency Modernista, knew of our five-meter, eight-color capability, and approached us to print the graphics for this particular campaign. The VUTEk® UltraVu® 5330 EC was the perfect solution, allowing us to produce ultra high quality print to fulfill our task.’

The VUTEk® printed billboard has been designed to create maximum impact to the thousands of visitors to the Fenway Park stadium. It is hoped this campaign will gain substantial local and national media coverage for the Stop Handgun Violence organization, in the run up to the 2004 Democratic National Convention in July.

Bob continues, ‘The billboard features an image of a machine gun, designed to create maximum impact. As such, it was imperative that the quality of print be as high as possible.

‘The immense size of the print meant we had to use two segments of 13 oz self-adhesive vinyl. The UltraVu® 5330 EC-s accurate registration set-up, meant that we could easily line up the overlapping vinyl sections, ensuring the print had no visible seams. Because the billboard itself was so vast, it was necessary to construct it in three sections.’

Stop Handgun Violence is a non-profit organization committed to the prevention of gun violence through education, public awareness, effective law enforcement and common sense gun laws. The billboard will play a key part in raising awareness for the renewal of the Federal Assault Weapons Ban.

Bob says, ‘As a service orientated company, we pride ourselves on the quality of our work and the ability to deliver jobs quickly. We chose the VUTEk® UltraVu® 5330 EC for its quality of print, speed, reliability, flexibility and VUTEk-s reputation for outstanding service. In completing this job, the UltraVu® 5330 EC has certainly lived up to expectations.’

UniGraphic Inc. claims that it can be highly responsive to clients needs, by utilizing the VUTEk® UltraVu® 5330 EC’s ability to switch from high quality eight-color banner printing, to four-color high production billboard printing in minutes. This has enabled UniGraphic to take on more work, producing a wide range of large format applications.

UniGraphic Inc. was established in 1964 and currently employs 108 people at its headquarters in Woburn, Massachusetts. UniGraphic is one of New England-s premier print shops, providing a range of services including scanning, image setting, digital proofing, and both digital and commercial printing. Its clients include Timberland, Converse, Hummer, Putnam Investments and several large advertising agencies including Arnold Worldwide, Allen and Gerritsen and Modernista.

Bob concludes, ‘The UltraVu® 5330 EC has a key role to play in the future of UniGraphic Inc. We were originally a pre-press company that diversified into commercial and digital printing. In moving the business forward it was logical to expand into large format printing. Since installing the VUTEk® UltraVu® 5330 EC, sales have increased by 30%, attracting many new clients. As a result of our success we now have plans to open offices in New York.’
